Automotive workshop
Vehicle lifts, pneumatic tools, parts storage, 12 to 14 ft ceilings, 10 ft wide roll-up doors
Buying Guide
Everything you need to know, from first quote to finished workshop.
A metal workshop is a steel building designed for mechanical, woodworking, hobby, or trade work, typically 20 to 60 feet wide with 10 to 14 ft ceilings for vehicle access and tool clearance. This guide walks you through every stage of buying a metal workshop: choosing the right size and height, deciding on insulation and doors, understanding costs and financing options, pulling permits, preparing the site, foundation choices, installation day, and setting up the interior after delivery. Follow it in order and you will avoid the most common mistakes buyers make.
Buying a metal workshop is one of the smartest investments you can make in your property, your trade, or your hobbies. The right workshop metal building gives you a dedicated space to work year-round, store tools and equipment securely, and expand what you can do on your own property. The wrong workshop costs you money every time you need to reach around a column, open a door that is too narrow, or wish for an extra five feet of ceiling height.
This guide is written for first-time buyers who want to get the decisions right the first time. It covers everything from pre-purchase planning through installation day and interior setup, with the same rules Bulldog Steel Structures applies to every workshop we deliver across 46 states.
Part 1
Every decision about your metal workshop starts here. The size, height, and intended use drive every other choice down the line, so getting these three right before you request a quote saves time, money, and the regret of buying a workshop that is slightly too small.
What will you actually do in this workshop? Different uses demand different features, and trying to make a single workshop do everything leads to compromises in all directions. Be honest about your primary use and the two or three secondary uses you want it to handle.
Vehicle lifts, pneumatic tools, parts storage, 12 to 14 ft ceilings, 10 ft wide roll-up doors
Dust collection, long material storage, 10 to 12 ft ceilings, bench space, outlets every 6 feet
Welding bays, ventilation, concrete floor, 220V power, fire-resistant interior
Mixed project space, insulated for climate, 10 to 12 ft ceilings, workbench and tool storage
Material storage, inventory space, loading access, climate control for finished work
Potting benches, tool storage, cold-frame space, water access, wide walk-in doors
Workshop size is the single most regretted decision buyers make, and almost always in the same direction: too small. Buy the next size up from what you think you need. The extra square footage pays for itself the first time you avoid rearranging the whole shop to make room for a project.
Small hobby workshop, no vehicle
Fits one workbench, basic tools, storage
Hobby shop with light storage
Workbench plus a single car or motorcycle
Standard home workshop
Workbench, tools, one vehicle, moderate storage
Dedicated workshop with vehicle access
Two vehicles plus full workshop space
Workshop plus substantial storage
Multiple bays, long workbenches, equipment room
Commercial or multi-bay workshop
Multiple work zones, vehicle lifts, inventory
Large commercial workshop
Multiple employees, trade shop, light manufacturing
Sizing tip
Between two sizes? Pick the larger one.
Larger buildings usually cost less per square foot.
Ceiling height matters more than most buyers expect, because unlike floor space, it cannot be expanded after construction. Base your decision on the tallest thing you ever expect to work on, then add two feet of clearance for safety and lighting.
8 to 10 ft
Basic hobby workshop, no vehicles, short workbench projects
12 ft
Standard workshop with cars, SUVs, pickups, and most hobby equipment
14 ft
Lifted trucks, vehicle lifts, small RVs, taller equipment and shelving
16 ft
Full-size RVs, boats, aircraft, industrial equipment
18 ft and above
Commercial workshops, heavy equipment, overhead cranes
Insulation is dramatically cheaper to specify at order than to retrofit later. If your workshop will be used year-round, in extreme climates, or for any temperature-sensitive work (electronics, finishing, livestock), insulation is a required feature, not an upgrade.
Insulated metal workshops typically deliver 10 to 20% lower heating and cooling costs compared to uninsulated buildings, and prevent condensation on the inside of the steel panels when warm humid air meets a cool roof. The three main insulation choices are fiberglass batts (cheapest), spray foam (best thermal performance), and insulated metal panels (IMPs, premium commercial option).
Fiberglass batts
Cheapest
Spray foam
Best thermal performance
Insulated metal panels (IMPs)
Premium commercial option
Part 2
Once you know your size, height, and purpose, these are the specifications you will configure at quote.
Three roof styles are available on most metal workshops, and the difference matters more on larger buildings than smaller ones:
Rounded eaves with horizontal panels. The least expensive option and acceptable in mild climates with little snow.
A-frame shape with horizontal panels. More traditional appearance; same weather performance as regular.
A-frame with vertical panels and ridge caps. Rain and snow shed off instead of sitting in ridges. The strongly recommended choice for any workshop in snow or heavy rain regions.
Framing gauge affects both the strength and the cost of your workshop. 14-gauge is standard; 12-gauge is heavier and recommended for commercial use, extreme weather, or large spans.
Standard for most residential workshops, hobby shops, and light commercial use
Recommended for commercial workshops, areas with high wind or heavy snow, and spans over 40 feet
Door and window placement is the hardest thing to change after installation. Walk through your intended daily workflow before specifying.
For doors, consider: how will vehicles enter and exit, do you need pass-through access, will you need a separate walk-in door, and should garage doors be insulated. Standard roll-up door sizes include 8x7, 9x8, 10x10, and 12x12. A walk-in door on the side wall lets you access the workshop without opening a roll-up every time.
For windows, consider: do you need natural light for daytime work, where will windows face and how will that affect heat, and do you need secure or break-resistant windows for a commercial metal buildings workshop. Standard windows are 30x36 and placed where you need light or ventilation most.
Part 3
Metal workshop pricing varies by size, gauge, roof style, doors, insulation, and site location. Rather than fixating on sticker price, focus on what drives cost and which payment option matches your situation.
| Factor | Cost Impact |
|---|---|
| Size (square footage) | Direct driver. Larger buildings have lower cost per square foot |
| Ceiling height | Each height increase adds material cost |
| Framing gauge | 12-gauge upgrade adds 10 to 20% to framing cost |
| Roof style | Vertical roof adds modest cost over regular; worth it in weather |
| Insulation | Significant line item but massive long-term savings |
| Doors and windows | Each additional opening adds cost |
| Certification | Wind and snow certification required in many areas |
| Location | Delivery and installation costs vary by state |
| Site conditions | Difficult access or sites may increase installation cost |
Lowest total cost. Best if you have the full amount ready and want to avoid interest.
Available for qualified buyers with reduced-rate APR plans up to 10 years. See financing options for details.
No credit check, low monthly payments, no early payoff penalty. Rent-to-own is the most popular option for workshops at this price point.
0% interest for the first 6 months on qualifying orders.
Note on pricing: Metal buildings prices vary by state, site conditions, local wind and snow load requirements, and any certifications required for permit approval. Request a free quote to get accurate pricing for your location and configuration.
Part 4
Most counties require a building permit for a metal workshop, even on rural property. Confirm your local requirements before placing an order so your foundation and installation timeline do not get held up waiting for approval.
Permit rules vary significantly by county and sometimes by zoning district within a county. Call your local building department and ask three questions:
What is the current wind speed rating and snow load requirement for your area (in mph and PSF)
Minimum distance the workshop must be from property lines, roads, and other structures
Whether your intended use (hobby, agricultural, commercial) is allowed on your parcel
Part 5
Site preparation is the customer's responsibility, not the installer's. The foundation must be level, square, and ready before the install crew arrives. Mistakes at this step delay installation and sometimes add cost.
Most popular
Workshops with vehicles, heavy equipment, long-term use
Option 2
Pole-barn style installations, budget builds
Option 3
Workshops on existing paved surfaces
Option 4
Light-duty storage shops, agricultural use
Most workshop buyers choose concrete because it is the strongest, most permanent foundation and because the floor gets heavy daily use. A concrete slab also keeps dust and dirt out of your tools and provides a flat surface for mobile tool bases and vehicle lifts.
Types of Anchors for Metal Buildings →Whichever foundation you choose, the site must be ready before the Bulldog install crew arrives. That means:
Part 6
Once your workshop is manufactured and your site is ready, Bulldog schedules delivery and installation together. Here is what to expect.
1 to 2 days
20' x 20' to 24' x 30'
2 to 3 days
30' x 40' to 30' x 50'
3 to 4 days
40' x 60'
4 to 7 days
50' x 80' and larger
The Bulldog installation crew arrives with the pre-engineered components, tools, and anchors needed for your specific workshop. Installation follows a predictable sequence:
Step 1
Base rails anchored to the foundation, square and level verified
Step 2
Vertical frames erected and connected to the base rails
Step 3
Roof trusses installed, connected to the vertical frames
Step 4
Roof panels installed first, then wall panels
Step 5
Roll-up doors, walk-in doors, windows, and any extras installed
Step 6
Trim installed, final anchor check, cleanup
Most of the work is handled by the Bulldog crew, but there are a few things you should plan for:
Part 7
Bulldog delivers the shell, foundation anchors, and all exterior components. Interior finishing is up to you (or your contractors). Here is the typical sequence most workshop owners follow.
If not already included, add insulation before interior walls or finishing. Insulated metal panels, spray foam, or batts are all options.
Hire a licensed electrician to run power from your main panel into the workshop. Plan outlets every 6 feet along workbench walls, 220V where needed, and dedicated circuits for major tools.
LED shop lighting is the standard today. Plan 50 to 70 foot-candles for general workshop work and higher for detail areas.
If your workshop will have a bathroom, utility sink, or heated systems, run plumbing early. Most workshops do not need plumbing beyond a hose bib.
Heating options include electric heaters, propane heaters, mini-split systems, or in-floor heat. Choose based on climate and how much time you will spend in the workshop.
Design your workbench and tool storage around how you actually work. The classic workshop layout puts a long workbench along one wall, mobile tools in the center for flexibility, and heavy stationary tools (table saw, drill press, lathe) positioned where they get the most natural light. Leave at least 3 feet of walkway between major equipment.
For woodworking workshops, dust collection is a safety requirement, not an upgrade. Plan ducting runs when you set up tool placement. For metalwork or welding, ventilation to the outside is critical. For most hobby workshops, operable windows and a ceiling fan are enough.
Steel workshops have become the standard choice for serious workshop owners because they deliver advantages wood simply cannot match:
Steel workshops cost 20 to 40% less than wood-frame construction of the same size
Delivered and installed in days instead of the months a wood build requires
A properly maintained steel workshop lasts 50 years or more with minimal repairs
Galvanized steel is immune to termites, rot, and warping that plague wood structures
Steel does not burn, which lowers insurance premiums 15 to 40% in most areas
Clear-span steel construction means no interior columns blocking your workflow
Steel buildings scale with lean-tos, bay additions, and secondary buildings as your needs grow
Get pricing for your size, location, and options.
These are the five most common mistakes we see first-time workshop buyers make. Avoiding any one of them pays for this guide many times over:
Floor space can sometimes be added later; ceiling height almost never can. Buy the taller eave now.
Retrofitting insulation costs 30 to 50% more than specifying it at order. If you will use the workshop year-round, insulate at order.
Walk through your actual workflow before specifying door and window placement. Changes after installation are expensive.
Pulling the permit yourself is cheap. Having the inspector shut down installation because no permit was filed is expensive.
An uneven, incorrectly sized, or unprepared site delays installation and sometimes adds cost. Confirm foundation dimensions match the workshop specs exactly before pouring.
The right workshop size depends on your intended use, the vehicles or equipment you will store, and the workspace you need around them. As a starting point: 20x20 for small hobby shops, 24x30 for standard home workshops, 30x40 for workshops with vehicle access, and 40x60 or larger for commercial or multi-bay use. Most buyers end up wishing they had sized up by at least one standard size.
For most workshops, 12 ft is the right eave height. It handles standard cars, SUVs, pickups, and most workshop equipment. If you plan to use a vehicle lift, order a 14 ft eave minimum. For large commercial workshops or buildings with overhead equipment, 16 ft or taller may be needed. Ceiling height cannot be increased after construction, so buy the taller option when in doubt.
Yes if you will use the workshop year-round, in extreme climates, or for any temperature-sensitive work. Insulation is 30 to 50% cheaper to specify at order than to retrofit later. Insulated metal workshops deliver 10 to 20% lower heating and cooling costs and prevent condensation on the inside of the steel panels when warm, humid air meets a cool roof.
A metal workshop can be installed on concrete, asphalt, or gravel. Most workshop buyers choose a concrete slab because it is permanent, supports heavy equipment and vehicles, keeps dust out, and provides a flat surface for mobile tool bases. Gravel pads work for light-duty storage workshops. Foundation preparation is the customer's responsibility and must be complete before the install crew arrives.
In most cases, yes. Permit requirements vary by county, but most areas require a building permit for structures of workshop size. Some rural counties waive permits for agricultural-use buildings on qualifying acreage. Confirm your local requirements before ordering. Bulldog provides engineered drawings for permit submission as part of your order.
Installation time depends on size. A small 20x20 workshop installs in 1 to 2 days. A 30x40 takes 2 to 3 days. A 40x60 commercial workshop takes 3 to 4 days. A 50x80 or larger workshop can take 4 to 7 days. Total time from order to installed workshop is typically 4 to 8 weeks including manufacturing lead time.
Yes. Rent-to-own programs let you buy a metal workshop with no credit check, low monthly payments over 24 to 48 months, and no early payoff penalty. This is the most popular payment option for workshops at this price point because it removes the large upfront payment without a credit application.
The most affordable workshops use standard sizes, 14-gauge framing, regular roof style, standard doors, and no insulation. Larger buildings often have better cost per square foot than smaller ones, so sizing up is not always more expensive on a per-foot basis. Rent-to-own also makes workshops more affordable by removing the upfront cost.
Yes. Metal workshops accept standard electrical and plumbing just like any other building. Hire a licensed electrician to run power from your main panel to the workshop, plan outlets every 6 feet along workbench walls, and include 220V where you need it for larger tools. Plumbing is less common in workshops but can be added where needed.
Yes. Metal workshops are designed to accept lean-to additions on the side or end, bay additions that extend the main building, mezzanine levels for extra storage, and even secondary buildings on the same lot. Expansion is far cheaper than tearing down and rebuilding, so plan ahead for growth when choosing your original size and placement.

I'm really happy with the way my building turned out! Due to living in city limits I had to make changes to my original plan but working with Bryan made it easy. He was great to work with!
Bulldog Steel Structures is fantastic. We had a 24'x40' garage built with two 10' garage doors, an entry door, two windows and fully insulated for under $16,000. The whole experience was so easy. Our salesman was Bryan Valadez. Bryan was so helpful and was easily available to answer my questions. Rebekah Aldridge handled all the documents and signing of them. The whole process was great. The building is well constructed and the crew that erected it were courteous and cleaned the worksite afterwords thoroughly. They did an excellent job in a time efficient period. Our experience with Bulldog Steel Structures was just great and we highly recommend them.
I'm in early stages, just put deposit on building. I reviewed about 10 quotes and worked with many vendors in the space to assess. Constance from Bulldog Steel Structures made the experience fabulous and was key in our decision making. It's so refreshing to see a company like this have such outstanding client facing service. We are excited and huge shout out to Constance and the team. Bravo!
I have purchased two structures/buildings from them and have been greatly satisfied. From "idea to implementation" it has gone smoothly. I love the idea of having one single point of contact (Noah) for any questions or concerns. The install crew comes in and gets right to work and the quality is the best I have seen. Highly Recommend!
I worked with Bryan Valadez in putting together my bids for a 2000 SF shop/garage. He was great to work with, very quick to respond and answered all my questions and concerns during several very thorough conversations regarding my project. I recommend you give Bulldog a shot when searching for your next building, their pricing was very good compared with some of the others, and they just seemed to have it very together for their process. Great Job, thanks Bryan. Jason
Showed up on time and excellent quality. Could not be more pleased with the results!
I called and spoke to Bryan. With some back and forth he helped me finalize the design (40x100 foot print). I placed my order and had to wait for my King County building permit to be issued. Once the slab was completed the installation team arrived with all the pieces. They got right to work and the building was completed in 8 days !!! I would highly recommend Bryan and Bulldog to any one :) Many thanks john in the pacific northwest
Great company to do business with. Would recommend them to others.
Great to deal with. Building went up with no problems.
I had a great experience with Bulldog Steel Buildings. The representatives were able to help me move from the online design to an actual building design to meet my goals. They set up the delivery and installation which turned out great. Installation was scheduled quickly after the foundation was done; and the building was completed within 2 days. Pricing was reasonable, and I'm very pleased with my new building.
Bryan was great- honest, helpful, responsive and knowledgeable. I will call him if I ever need another steel building
This company is the real deal. They go over and beyond to satisfy their customers. It is a joy to work with them. They are very knowledgeable and efficient. I looked forward to finishing my project with them.
Humberto was very responsive and it was a pleasure to work with. He went above and beyond to get delivery scheduled as soon as possible for our 30x50 building. Great company to work with.
Hey folks - these people at Bulldog are real. Noah helped me all the way through - extremely patient and knowledgeable. He answers most often and when he doesn't it's easy to get another HUMAN to speak with. I looked at several companies for this project - I settled on the right one. If you wind up doing business with Brian - you're in luck there to. Outstanding work - worthy of trust.
I purchased a 26x32 Garage from Bulldog Steel Structures they had it finished in two days. It looks really nice and the install crew was great. I’m thinking of getting another building and I will definitely contact Bryan Valadez again at Bulldog.
Great experience from start to finish. The sales process was easy and Casey helped me revise my plans several times to get the right building for my needs. Communication was excellent! The build crew was on time, friendly and professional. Beto took the time to understand what cutouts I needed and why I needed them in the sizes planned. Exceptional work. Highly recommend. Thank you!
I would recommend Bulldog Steel Structures highly. They are very professional and accommodating. Want to give special thanks to Randall Hall and also matt preslar. They were very accommodating and helping me fill out paperwork and handling things when a timely basis. The building we were very satisfied with and the installers also were very polite and had things done on a timely basis. Thanks again Randall and Matt you`ve got my five star rating
Bulldog has been great to work with. They explained everything from beginning to end. I live in the mountains of New Mexico and the staff made sure that my garage had the right support needed for this area of the country. I would highly recommend them for anyone building a new carport or gaeage!
Good design tool on their website. Great customer service.
Have had nothing but a positive experience with Bulldog! Bryan was super helpful and still is after our install! He still responds super prompt and helpful. No complaints about our structure, as it looks amazing! Installers did a great job and picked up very nicely after they were done. Highly recommend!!
I have now had my building in place for 3 months and I want to say that the whole team at Bulldog was very helpful throughout the entire process. My salesperson, Matthew, was extremely responsive. He was very helpful with the design phase, where we went back and forth with 3-4 different designs before settling on the perfect one. He always got back to me right away when I had a question. Although the delivery was delayed, understandable with the pandemic, he helped interface with Carolina Carports when I had delivery questions. So far I have no issues with the completed building. No leaks and all the doors are functioning perfectly. I would highly recommend using Bulldog for all your metal building needs.
Frank Rangel was very helpful and respectful. Also very understanding. I was pouring a concrete driveway and trying to put my down payment down. I may of got a little frustrated in the middle of it all. I could see the smile on Frank`s face the whole time! Thank you sir!
This is my second building from bulldog and I`m buying the same building , just different colors. They are great buildings that are strong and economical.
Excellent customer service during my order process, answered all my questions and they were very patient.
The website was very flexible and helped me customize my carport. The Bulldog staff was very prompt and helpful throughout the process.
Put up a RV cover for me on a concrete pad. Turned out great and the guys cleaned up after the work. Very satisfied. Would recommend these people.
I love my “She Shop.” It was amazingly easy. I sent an email, made 2 phones calls and it was done. The installation went even easier. Three guys showed up one day and finished the next. They were polite and cleaned up after themselves. My husband’s friends are all very impressed with the construction and materials used but were amazed at the reasonable price. I could not be more pleased. Thank you
I visited their website and used the 3D estimator and was able to see my building with doors, window placements, colors, and overall look. When you add or change any feature, including size, you can immediately see the result and change in price (if any). You can rotate the structure to see the overall look and framework. Once I placed my order, it was quickly and efficiently handled and the cost was lower than the estimate on the website The installers showed up early one morning and by noon the next day they had completed the structure. Everyone that comes by remarks on how nice it looks. I am very pleased with every aspect from ordering to installation.
