Regular roof
Rounded eaves, horizontal panels. The cheapest option, and fine in mild climates with little snow.

A single car garage is a fully enclosed building sized to hold one vehicle, with walls on all four sides, a roof, and at least one door. In steel construction, the standard footprint is 12 feet wide by 21, 26, or 31 feet long.
The width is the part that is effectively fixed. Twelve feet is the industry standard because it gives a car about two feet of clearance on each side — enough to open a door without hitting the wall. Length is where the choice is made, and it depends less on the vehicle than on what else goes in beside it.
A 1-car garage is 12 feet wide as standard, with three common lengths: 21, 26, and 31 feet. Eave heights run from 8 to 12 feet, depending on the vehicle and whether a lift or roof rack is involved.
| Size | Best for | What also fits |
|---|---|---|
| 12' x 21' | A single car, parked and closed up | Little else — the vehicle and a narrow shelf |
| 12' x 26' | A car plus a workbench at the end | Bench, tools, mower, bikes down one side |
| 12' x 31' | A pickup or long vehicle with room to spare | Full-size truck plus storage behind it |
| 12' x 21' x 12' | A vehicle with a roof rack, or a future lift | Extra eave height rather than extra floor |
Sizing tip: most people who regret a 1-car garage regret the length, not the width. A 12' x 21' holds the car and nothing else. If a bench, a mower, or a set of shelves is anywhere in the plan, order the 26 — the extra five feet costs far less than the frustration.
A full-size pickup fits a 12' x 26' comfortably and a 12' x 31' with room to walk around it. A 12' x 21' is tight — most full-size trucks measure 19 to 20 feet, which leaves barely a foot at each end once the door is closed.
Get a Free QuoteHeight matters as much as length.
A standard 8-foot eave suits a car; a lifted truck, a roof rack, or a rooftop tent needs 10 or 12 feet, and the roll-up door height has to be specified to match.
Measure, don't guess.
It is worth measuring the vehicle rather than guessing from the model name.
Three, and the choice comes down to weather rather than looks.
Rounded eaves, horizontal panels. The cheapest option, and fine in mild climates with little snow.
An A-frame shape with horizontal panels. Looks more like a house roof; the same weather performance as regular.
A-frame with vertical panels and ridge caps. Rain and snow run straight off rather than sitting in the ridges, so panels stay cleaner and the roof lasts longer. The one to buy anywhere with real snow load.
Every opening and every dimension is set at order, not picked from three shelf options.
Specified independently of the 12-foot width.
Width and height sized to the vehicle, positioned on the end or the side.
So the roll-up does not have to be opened to fetch a spanner.
Placed where light is actually needed.
Roof, walls and trim chosen separately to match the house, previewed in the Color Planner before ordering.
Specified at order if the garage will be used as a workshop.
Matched to concrete, asphalt, or gravel.
Build the whole garage on screen and send it straight to a specialist for a price.
Open the 3D Designer →A garage is enclosed and lockable; a carport is open-sided and cheaper. The right answer depends on whether the vehicle needs security and weather protection, or just a roof.
| Feature | 1-car garage | 1-car carport |
|---|---|---|
| Sides | Fully enclosed | Open, or closed on one or two sides |
| Security | Lockable roll-up door | None |
| Weather | Full protection including wind-driven rain | Overhead protection only |
| Storage | Tools and equipment can be left in it | Vehicle only |
| Cost | Higher — walls, doors and framing | Lower |
| Permit | Usually required | Often exempt at small sizes |
If the vehicle is a daily driver on a safe driveway, a carport does the job for less. If it is a classic, a project, a motorcycle, or if tools are going in beside it, buy the garage.
Yes. Rent-to-own metal garages are available for one-car metal garages with no credit check, flexible payment options, affordable monthly payments, and no early payoff penalty.
See Rent-to-Own OptionsOne of the lowest monthly figures Bulldog offers.
A 1-car garage is one of the smaller enclosed buildings in the range, so the monthly figure is among the lowest Bulldog offers. Financing is also available for qualified buyers and generally gives longer terms with lower monthly payments.
Four steps, and the first one is free — pick the size, get it priced, choose a payment method, and prepare the ground.
Measure the vehicle, add the bench or shelving, then choose 21, 26, or 31 feet. The 3D designer builds it on screen, or a specialist takes the details on 888-551-2156.
Bulldog confirms the specification, any local permit requirements, and the installed price.
Pay outright, finance, or take rent-to-own with no credit check.

The standard steel 1-car garage is 12 feet wide, with lengths of 21, 26 or 31 feet. Twelve feet is the industry width because it leaves roughly two feet of clearance on each side of a car, enough to open a door without hitting the wall. Length is the real decision, and it depends on whether anything goes in beside the vehicle.
No. A 1-car metal garage installs on concrete, asphalt or gravel. A gravel pad should be at least four inches deep, contained by a border, and extend slightly past the building's footprint. On gravel the garage is fixed with auger anchors rather than the concrete wedge anchors used on a slab.
Usually yes. Most counties treat an enclosed garage as a permitted structure regardless of size, even where a carport of the same footprint would be exempt. Pulling the permit is the customer's responsibility, and Bulldog can provide the drawings the building department asks for. Ask a specialist whether the area requires engineer-certified plans.
A standard car clears a 7-foot door on an 8-foot eave. A pickup, a van or anything with a roof rack needs 8 feet or more, which means a 10 or 12-foot eave height. The door height is set by the eave height, so both have to be decided together at order. Neither can be raised afterwards without rebuilding the frame.
A properly installed and anchored steel garage will last decades with very little upkeep. Galvanized steel framing resists rust, rot and insects, so there is no repainting, no wood rot and no termite treatment. Occasional washing and a periodic check of the fasteners is essentially the entire maintenance schedule.
Length can sometimes be extended and a lean-to can usually be added to the side, but width and eave height cannot be changed once the frame is built. That is why the advice is always to buy one size up rather than plan to extend. The cost of the extra five feet at order is a fraction of the cost of revisiting it.
I'm really happy with the way my building turned out! Due to living in city limits I had to make changes to my original plan but working with Bryan made it easy. He was great to work with!
Bulldog Steel Structures is fantastic. We had a 24'x40' garage built with two 10' garage doors, an entry door, two windows and fully insulated for under $16,000. The whole experience was so easy. Our salesman was Bryan Valadez. Bryan was so helpful and was easily available to answer my questions. Rebekah Aldridge handled all the documents and signing of them. The whole process was great. The building is well constructed and the crew that erected it were courteous and cleaned the worksite afterwords thoroughly. They did an excellent job in a time efficient period. Our experience with Bulldog Steel Structures was just great and we highly recommend them.
I'm in early stages, just put deposit on building. I reviewed about 10 quotes and worked with many vendors in the space to assess. Constance from Bulldog Steel Structures made the experience fabulous and was key in our decision making. It's so refreshing to see a company like this have such outstanding client facing service. We are excited and huge shout out to Constance and the team. Bravo!
I have purchased two structures/buildings from them and have been greatly satisfied. From "idea to implementation" it has gone smoothly. I love the idea of having one single point of contact (Noah) for any questions or concerns. The install crew comes in and gets right to work and the quality is the best I have seen. Highly Recommend!
I worked with Bryan Valadez in putting together my bids for a 2000 SF shop/garage. He was great to work with, very quick to respond and answered all my questions and concerns during several very thorough conversations regarding my project. I recommend you give Bulldog a shot when searching for your next building, their pricing was very good compared with some of the others, and they just seemed to have it very together for their process. Great Job, thanks Bryan. Jason
Showed up on time and excellent quality. Could not be more pleased with the results!
I called and spoke to Bryan. With some back and forth he helped me finalize the design (40x100 foot print). I placed my order and had to wait for my King County building permit to be issued. Once the slab was completed the installation team arrived with all the pieces. They got right to work and the building was completed in 8 days !!! I would highly recommend Bryan and Bulldog to any one :) Many thanks john in the pacific northwest
Great company to do business with. Would recommend them to others.
Great to deal with. Building went up with no problems.
I had a great experience with Bulldog Steel Buildings. The representatives were able to help me move from the online design to an actual building design to meet my goals. They set up the delivery and installation which turned out great. Installation was scheduled quickly after the foundation was done; and the building was completed within 2 days. Pricing was reasonable, and I'm very pleased with my new building.
Bryan was great- honest, helpful, responsive and knowledgeable. I will call him if I ever need another steel building
This company is the real deal. They go over and beyond to satisfy their customers. It is a joy to work with them. They are very knowledgeable and efficient. I looked forward to finishing my project with them.
Humberto was very responsive and it was a pleasure to work with. He went above and beyond to get delivery scheduled as soon as possible for our 30x50 building. Great company to work with.
Hey folks - these people at Bulldog are real. Noah helped me all the way through - extremely patient and knowledgeable. He answers most often and when he doesn't it's easy to get another HUMAN to speak with. I looked at several companies for this project - I settled on the right one. If you wind up doing business with Brian - you're in luck there to. Outstanding work - worthy of trust.
I purchased a 26x32 Garage from Bulldog Steel Structures they had it finished in two days. It looks really nice and the install crew was great. I’m thinking of getting another building and I will definitely contact Bryan Valadez again at Bulldog.
Great experience from start to finish. The sales process was easy and Casey helped me revise my plans several times to get the right building for my needs. Communication was excellent! The build crew was on time, friendly and professional. Beto took the time to understand what cutouts I needed and why I needed them in the sizes planned. Exceptional work. Highly recommend. Thank you!
I would recommend Bulldog Steel Structures highly. They are very professional and accommodating. Want to give special thanks to Randall Hall and also matt preslar. They were very accommodating and helping me fill out paperwork and handling things when a timely basis. The building we were very satisfied with and the installers also were very polite and had things done on a timely basis. Thanks again Randall and Matt you`ve got my five star rating
Bulldog has been great to work with. They explained everything from beginning to end. I live in the mountains of New Mexico and the staff made sure that my garage had the right support needed for this area of the country. I would highly recommend them for anyone building a new carport or gaeage!
Good design tool on their website. Great customer service.
Have had nothing but a positive experience with Bulldog! Bryan was super helpful and still is after our install! He still responds super prompt and helpful. No complaints about our structure, as it looks amazing! Installers did a great job and picked up very nicely after they were done. Highly recommend!!
I have now had my building in place for 3 months and I want to say that the whole team at Bulldog was very helpful throughout the entire process. My salesperson, Matthew, was extremely responsive. He was very helpful with the design phase, where we went back and forth with 3-4 different designs before settling on the perfect one. He always got back to me right away when I had a question. Although the delivery was delayed, understandable with the pandemic, he helped interface with Carolina Carports when I had delivery questions. So far I have no issues with the completed building. No leaks and all the doors are functioning perfectly. I would highly recommend using Bulldog for all your metal building needs.
Frank Rangel was very helpful and respectful. Also very understanding. I was pouring a concrete driveway and trying to put my down payment down. I may of got a little frustrated in the middle of it all. I could see the smile on Frank`s face the whole time! Thank you sir!
This is my second building from bulldog and I`m buying the same building , just different colors. They are great buildings that are strong and economical.
Excellent customer service during my order process, answered all my questions and they were very patient.
The website was very flexible and helped me customize my carport. The Bulldog staff was very prompt and helpful throughout the process.
Put up a RV cover for me on a concrete pad. Turned out great and the guys cleaned up after the work. Very satisfied. Would recommend these people.
I love my “She Shop.” It was amazingly easy. I sent an email, made 2 phones calls and it was done. The installation went even easier. Three guys showed up one day and finished the next. They were polite and cleaned up after themselves. My husband’s friends are all very impressed with the construction and materials used but were amazed at the reasonable price. I could not be more pleased. Thank you
I visited their website and used the 3D estimator and was able to see my building with doors, window placements, colors, and overall look. When you add or change any feature, including size, you can immediately see the result and change in price (if any). You can rotate the structure to see the overall look and framework. Once I placed my order, it was quickly and efficiently handled and the cost was lower than the estimate on the website The installers showed up early one morning and by noon the next day they had completed the structure. Everyone that comes by remarks on how nice it looks. I am very pleased with every aspect from ordering to installation.
