Buying a custom metal garage is an investment, and like any investment, you want to make a smart buying decision. Here are some things to think about when purchasing a garage:
A metal garage can last from 30 to 50 years or longer with proper care and maintenance.
For the longest life span, inspect and maintain your metal building annually and take care of any corrosion, dents, dings, wind damage, or roof damage as soon as possible. Repair or replace rusty or loose fasteners and loose or damaged siding or roofing panels.
A quality metal barn will be stronger, more durable, and longer lasting than a typical wood barn. Plus, metal isn’t subject to the water damage, warping, and rot that wood is, especially when the barn is used for livestock, feed storage, or grain storage.
At Bulldog Steel Structures, our Carolina barns, Seneca barns, and horse barns are all great values with American-made steel that can outperform nearly any wood barn.
Quality concrete footings and a concrete pad are recommended for most metal buildings. The concrete helps make the metal building more rigid, prevents wind uplift, and provides a comfortable floor to work on.
At Bulldog Steel Structures, we highly recommend a concrete pad for all our metal garages, barns, and commercial buildings.
For a residential garage, the concrete slab should be at least 4 inches thick. In a commercial garage, a shop, or a barn that stores heavy equipment like tractors, trucks, or backhoes, the slab should be at least 5 or 6 inches thick, and it’s good to use concrete with higher compression strength.
Our team at Bulldog Steel Structures can help you determine the best type of slab and the necessary thickness for your application.
